In less than an hour, you can obtain more youthful and rejuvenated skin without any downtime. Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments — also called a photofacial — help patients at the Vancouver Laser & Skin Care Centre reduce fine lines, blemishes, and broken blood vessels; diminish freckles and age spots; smooth rough skin; and improve skin tone and elasticity. Consequently, the skin becomes more radiant and looks younger with no time off work!

Photorejuvenation Benefits

Intense pulsed light targets brown spots and red vessels. It also stimulates collagen, resulting in lighter, brighter skin and lasting rejuvenation.

  • successfully improves fine lines, sun-damage, age spots, the symptoms of rosacea, broken veins, and numerous other facial flaws
  • no downtime
  • skin “glows” after a series of treatments
  • any area of the body can be treated

How IPL Skin Rejuvenation Works

We use the Harmony platform for IPL facial rejuvenation. It is one of the most versatile lasers in the world and can deliver ideal and optimal treatments. The Harmony uses Advanced Fluorescent Technology, the next generation of intense pulsed light. During treatment, the IPL hand piece delivers pulses of light to the treated area, which stimulates collagen production. This gives the skin an improved texture and allows it to reflect light better. Photorejuvenation selectively targets abnormal changes that develop with age and successfully improves fine lines, sun-damage, age spots, the symptoms of rosacea, broken veins, and numerous other facial flaws.

Candidates for IPL Skin Rejuvenation

IPL skin rejuvenation is a versatile treatment that can help women and men with a range of skin conditions. In addition, the technology serves as a laser hair removal alternative for some patients. Good candidates for IPL skin treatments include men and women with the following concerns:

  • Rosacea
  • Hyperpigmentation (brown spots)
  • Wrinkles
  • Large pores
  • Age and sun spots
  • Spider veins
  • Stretch marks
  • Freckles

Generally speaking, it’s also important for candidates to be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the results.

What to Expect

To prepare the skin for IPL, we can prepare your skin with microdermabrasion, if you desire. During the treatment, the entire face is scanned with the intense pulsed light. Most times the area is treated with multiple passes with customized settings at our clinic. The formation of new collagen results in decreased fine lines and the repair of sun damage. Pigment comes to the surface and sloughs off. Red and blue vessels typically fade. The skin looks younger and reflects light from its smooth surface – it glows. The results are gradual and cumulative, so that there is no startling change in the appearance of your face after just a single IPL treatment. Other people will likely remark on a more revitalized and more youthful skin, but no one will know why! There is no downtime at all.

You may want to combine your IPL treatment with other procedures such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, Pixel™ fractional resurfacing or an Intraceuticals Oxygen facial.

Common Questions

What’s the difference between IPL and laser skin rejuvenation?
This is a question we hear frequently. The treatments use different technologies to accomplish similar goals. IPL uses light energy to produce heat, rather than laser wavelengths. IPL is often grouped in with laser treatments, but that isn’t technically correct. Both IPL and lasers are clinically proven to be safe and effective. The best choice depends on your unique needs.

What does an IPL treatment feel like?
You may experience mild discomfort during the procedure, similar to the sensation of snapping a rubber band against the skin, but each patient’s sensitivity to the light energy is different. If you anticipate having a high sensitivity, a topical anesthetic is available to numb the treatment area prior to the procedure.

What is recovery like after an IPL treatment?
There is typically no downtime after the treatment, unless the procedure is more aggressive. Expect to notice some puffiness, and if you’re targeting brown spots, they may appear darker at first as they heal. You may feel something akin to a mild sunburn in the treatment area(s). It takes about 2 weeks for the results to emerge, and there will be some peeling during that time.

What does an IPL treatment cost?
The cost of an IPL procedure varies depending on the area or areas being treated, the condition of your skin, and your cosmetic goals, among other factors. Our laser specialists discuss these issues during the consultation and create a detailed treatment plan that includes a quoted price.

Even though cost is a concern for most patients, we encourage you not to shop for the lowest-priced laser skin care. Men and women travel to our practice for laser and IPL treatments from Surrey and throughout southwest British Columbia because of the training and experience our laser specialists possess.
