Spring is in the Air

When you hear the word ‘spring’ we think of spring cleaning, garden and yard work, warmer weather. The earth is waking up after the long winter and renewing itself. Spring is the season to recharge, renew, and freshen up. Now is the time to tackle chores and perhaps begin a new exercise routine. Get active; greet the season with outdoor activities like cycling or running/walking in the park. Exercise raises hormones that deal with stress and enhances the immune system. So let’s get moving this spring!

Our own Dr. Susan Braun (pictured above) demonstrates the benefits of IPL Photorejuvenation.

What do people really want? Our patients tell us they want to look good for their age with healthy, radiant skin. One of the tell tale signs of aging is the appearance of brown spots on regularly exposed areas like the face, neck, chest, and hands. Using no downtime, non-ablative treatments such as IPL and ClearLift™ we are able to not only improve the visible brown spots and broken capillaries that contribute to a ruddy complexion, but also improve minor textural concerns while stimulating collagen for a youthful glow. Typically patients will do an initial series of treatments for optimal results. If you’re willing to do a few treatments per year as part of your maintenance, studies show undeniable cumulative benefits 10 years down the road! The IPL + ClearLift combination is one of the most popular treatments we offer, come in and see for yourself!

Dark circles under the eyes

There are four primary causes of dark under eye circles and it’s not just about getting your full 8 hours of sleep.

GENETICS: If you’ve noticed the purple-blue hue since childhood, chances are genes are at least partly to blame.

HYPERPIGMENTATION: Irritation can cause the skin to overproduce melanin. Eczema, makeup remover, and simply rubbing your eyes can also leave behind dark spots. Bruises can turn golden brown and stick around for weeks or even months. It may also be that you’re dealing with blood vessels instead of melanin. Vascular congestion is high in this area and the skin is much thinner so vessels are more visible.

AGING: Over time, the sun breaks down our collagen making the skin more fragile and transparent. As we naturally lose facial fullness and volume, the fat pads under the eyes also start to deteriorate and droop. This results in either hollowing the under eye area or creating puffy bags just below the shadows.

ALLERGIES: Our bodies release histamine in response to allergens, which can cause puffiness around the eyes, as well as itching and other symptoms.

The only way to effectively improve dark under eye shadows and circles is to get to the root of the cause. But don’t despair there are actually several treatment options:

  • Start with a retinol eye cream – it fades pigment and thickens collagen, making the skin more opaque. Some eye creams will also add plumping humectants like hyaluronic acid as well as peptides.
  • Topical fading agents such as a mild hydroquinone can safely diminish brown areas.
  • Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! Daily SPF and oversize sunglasses help prevent UV damage from further thinning the skin and breaking down your collagen.
  • Chemical Peels can yield fast results when it comes to fading melanin or hyperpigmentation.
  • Lasers such as a Q-switch Nd:Yag or Diode can get fairly close to the eye and target red vessels and melanin. Other lasers such as Pellevé are used to stimulate collagen repair and regeneration by delivering radiofrequency heat energy around the eye.
  • Hyaluronic acid fillers can be injected around the eye circle to help minimize a bulging fat pad or reduce hollowness.
  • Lastly, if it’s allergies that bring on your dark circles, take an over-the-counter antihistamine and sleep on an extra pillow to keep fluid from collecting under your eyes.

Veins Before and After photos

Varicose and Spider veins found in the legs can cause painful aches, restless legs, itching and in general they are unsightly. Varicose veins are worse during the summer months because heat and humidity cause further dilation to enlarged veins. As we head into the season of sundresses and swimsuits, don’t let your leg veins limit your wardrobe choices. Allure of the Seas

This past January, Dr.’s Martin & Susan Braun took the Van Laser team on another incredible cruise! We sailed aboard the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas and enjoyed everything this spectacular ship had to offer from Chicago, Cirque du Soleil’s Ocean Aria, comedy shows, the casino, shopping, zip-lining, rock-climbing, mini golf, & the flow rider. Not to be outdone was the spectacular food on board which even featured ‘Central Park’, a tree-lined park with real birds and café’s along the promenade. The staff on board were so friendly and willing to go above and beyond for the passengers.

Ports of call included Nassau, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten. We had the opportunity to wander the villages shopping for local trinkets and sampling some of the local delicacies. The beaches were more beautiful than post cards can convey. We had an amazing time together and laughed so hard we cried! On behalf of all our staff: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Dr.’s Martin & Susan Braun!

We’re often asked by patients for tips and tricks, things we’re all too happy to share! Below you’ll get an inside peek and hopefully some useful information…

Q: I’m starting to notice those dreaded upper lip lines and I don’t even smoke! What can I do?
A: Those vertical lines around the mouth can get you unfairly labeled as a smoker. However most of our patients don’t smoke and are pretty healthy. These lines can be caused by several factors but essentially it’s a combination of repetitive pursing movements and skin thinning, loss of collagen over time. Certainly avoiding the obvious culprits such as drinking from a straw and smoking will help, but you can’t change the way you purse your mouth when you speak. For that, Dr. Braun uses very small amounts of BOTOX®. Injecting a little at a time let’s you figure out what you like or don’t like and helps to soften those lines. Sometimes we also add a bit of dermal filler to help fill some of the deeper creases.

Q: I’m considering trying CoolSculpting® or Lipodissolve to reduce some unwanted fat but I’ve heard the fat can come back. Does the slimming effect really last?
A: Treatments such as CoolSculpting® & Lipodissolve injections work well to target small amounts of pinchable fatty tissue. These procedures kill a percentage of fat cells in the treatment area and they are naturally eliminated from the body. Dr. Braun describes fat cells as being similar to a balloon; they expand when you gain weight and shrink when you lose it. Even when fat is completely removed as with liposuction, patients who don’t eat healthy and exercise are still subject to gain deeper, visceral fat. As Dr. Braun says, “You can’t buy your way out of a lifestyle change.” Therefore the key to long-lasting results is to maintain a healthy diet and exercise!

Q: I think I want to try BOTOX® and Juvéderm™ but I’m worried about what my friends and family will think – should I go for it?
A: It’s normal to be a little worried about what those closest to you will think of your choices. Ultimately we view skin care and facial rejuvenation no differently than diet and exercise to keep your body healthy. Why not put our best faces forward by maintaining skin health with preventative, non-invasive treatments? The Canadian 2012 FACE Report said that 81% of Canadian women agree: a woman shouldn’t feel guilty if she wants to try injectable treatments. In fact, nearly 1 in 4 women say they’re quite open to cosmetic injectables for themselves! So when you’re ready to go for it, just be sure you’re choosing a reputable injector.
