Addressing Melasma requires specialized solutions, and at Vancouver Laser, we offer personalized treatments to effectively minimize pigmentation. Experience a tailored approach that targets the root cause, revealing a brighter, more even complexion.

What Is Melasma?

Melasma typically presents as brown or gray-brown patches on the skin, particularly on areas of the face that are exposed to sunlight. Commonly appearing on the forehead, cheeks, nose, and upper lip, these patches can vary in size and shape. The distinct pigmentation is a result of an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color.

What Causes Melasma?

The exact cause of Melasma is not fully understood, but factors such as genetics, sun exposure, and hormonal fluctuations are believed to contribute to its development.

  • Fluctuations in Hormones – Changes in hormonal levels, notably the rise in estrogen associated with menopause, birth control, and pregnancy, can stimulate an upsurge in melanin production
  • Sun Exposure – UV rays trigger melanin production, resulting in the development of either a tan or patches of pigmentation
  • Genetics – A family history of melasma, can influence its development.

Melasma Classification

Melasma is categorized based on the depth of pigmentation, resulting in three main types; epidermal, dermal and mixed. These classifications help characterize the nature and severity of melasma, guiding appropriate treatment approaches.

  • Epidermal Melasma – Pigmentation is concentrated in the top layer of the skin (epidermis).
  • Dermal Melasma – Pigmentation is visible on the surface of the skin and it extends into the deeper layer of the skin (dermis).
  • Mixed Melasma – Involves a combination of pigmentation in both the epidermis and dermis.
