6 Tips to Target Hair Loss

June 23, 2022

It is normal to lose anywhere from 50 to 100 strands of hair a day. In most cases hair regrows in its place, but what happens when it doesn’t?

According to studies, about 40% of men and women experience hair loss before the age of 50. BUT that doesn’t mean that if we start seeing more hair on our brushes or in the drain, that we should just accept it!

There are many factors that can contribute to hair loss, such as stress, new medication, a poor immune system, or big life changes (like having a baby). However, genetics, medical conditions, and lifestyle habits have a large part to play as well.

So, what steps can you take now to help treat current symptoms and possibly prevent the need for a hair transplant in the future?

Tip 1: Take a Good Look at Your Shampoo Bottle!

While volumizing, straightening, and strengthening shampoos have their benefits (gorgeous looking hair), they often contain some very harsh ingredients such as:

Parabens (They can get easily absorbed by the skin, penetrating deeply to cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, itchiness, and flaking)

Silicones (They can also cause product build-up, which can block your hair follicles and prevent the nourishing ingredients from reaching your hair, leading to hair thinning and loss)

Mineral Oils – They can suffocate your scalp, creating build-up and weighing down healthy hair!

Sodium Laureth Sulfate – SLS strips away natural oils, damages the proteins in your hair, and irritates your scalp! Yikes!

Isopropyl Alcohol – If your hair has been feeling especially dry lately, this could be why. Isopropyl alcohol makes hair dry, brittle, and rough, making it difficult to manage and prone to breakage.

Phthalates – This ingredient has been linked to hormone disruptions, which are a common cause for hair loss.

Hexachlorophene – this antiseptic ingredient causes scalp irritation!

The VLSCC Tip: Go for a natural shampoo! There are now lots of great options at your local drug store – BUT still always check the back of the bottle to make sure.

Tip 2: Watch What You Eat!

Fast food is delicious. But if you’re eating a lot of it, it could be a HUGE contributor to your receding hairline.

A lack of the right nutrients, including vitamins, A, C, D and E, zinc B vitamins, iron, biotin, and proteins and essential fatty acids, can slow down hair growth and contribute to hair loss.

Tip 3: Talk to a Medical Professional about Vitamins and Supplements!

Believe it or not, overdoing it on vitamins (such as Vitamin A) and nutritional supplements can also cause hair loss!

Bottom line – it’s best to seek professional medical advice before you start prescribing yourself any additional vitamins and minerals! If you do not understand what your body needs or any underlying health conditions prior to taking supplements, you could be causing more harm than good.

Tip 4 – Look for products that support hair growth!

We know they exist (we’ve all seen the ads for miracle serums and caps), but do they really work? The answer is: it’s complicated.

Hair growth products do have their benefits, but unless you combine them with the tips mentioned above – they can only do so much for so long…

We’ve included a few examples below:

Capilia® Density Control Kit for Men

Capillus LED Cap

This cap uses led light therapy to help with hair loss! The Capillus LED cap is FDA-cleared to help with hereditary hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia (male & female pattern balding).

Our tip – understand what’s causing your hair loss BEFORE you start buying up every serum, shampoo, and hair cap you can find!

Tip 5: Look into platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatments!

PRP (platelet rich plasma) is a simple non-surgical treatment that involves extracting platelet rich plasma (containing at least seven different growth factors that stimulate hair growth and rejuvenate scalp tissues) from the patient’s own blood, and injecting it into the scalp to improve hair density, follicle health and slow the signs of hair loss and thinning.

PRP is extracted from the patient’s own blood and a result of this, there is virtually no risk of allergic reactions or side effects. At Vancouver Laser Skin Care Centre, we use the WorldPRP™ system. This system has been proven to contain the highest quality of viable platelets resulting in three times more PRP with unrivaled purity.

Tip 6: Consider Hair Restoration Therapy

This treatment is the holy grail for hair restoration because it combines all 5 tips above!

Hair Restoration Therapy (HRT) dives deeper into your hair loss symptoms to help treat your condition at its source. Using platelet rich plasma therapy, and a series of in-depth testing to assess for indicators of chronic illness and nutrient deficiencies, we create a highly personalized health plan that helps optimize your body’s regenerative abilities for longer lasting results.
